Castleford 2000

Castleford, unlike many towns in the north, has prospered since the war. One of it's main industries was coal, but since the 1984 miners strike the coal faces are unstable and cannot be mined. This hasn't stopped the progression of Castleford as an indusrial town, in fact the opposite has happened.

Some of the major companies have set up sites in and around the Castleford area. These include technology giants Pioneer, confectionery kings Nestle, chemical firm Hickson & Welch and flour miller Allinson. Having this solid base of companies in the region has created a domino effect on all other aspects of life in Castleford.
A new factory outlet has opened in Castleford - Freeport Designer Outlet Shopping - attracting customers from all over the north and midlands of England with it's designer fashions at high street prices. In reality it had to try and prize shoppers away from the big stores of nearby Leeds and by all accounts has been a success. Only time will tell if it is to stay successful.

This positive and thriving attitude has meant more housing being built, houses that are creeping slowly upon Bill's home village of Allerton Bywater. Of course residents want to keep their villages sacred from becoming part of suburbia, community is important to all of us, but Castleford can count itself lucky that it hasn't become the ghost towns of many North-East mining towns and villages after the miners strike.

Rugby League has always been the only sport worth watching in Castleford. Here you won't see many kids running around with Man Utd replica kits, no there is one team and one team only here................
Castleford Tigers RLFC.
Rugby League is big business since Sky TV pumped money into the game and the Tigers have embraced this lucrative deal. They will shortly move into a new stadium, one that will hopefully put them on a level platform as Bradford, Wigan and St Helens.Castleford Coat of Arms

It's moving along quite nicely in Castleford with all this new money in the area, one of Castleford's more famous daughters might just be shouting spend, spend, spend. Remember Viv Nicholson?
Yes that 60's pools winner hails from Castleford, as does the world famous sculptor Henry Moore.
Viv may not be as revered or respected as much as Moore, but I'm sure she's just as well loved.

So it's looking good for Castleford as it moves into the new millennium.
A successful town in a new era. A blueprint for progression.
