Castleford 2000 Castleford, unlike many towns in the north, has prospered since
the war. One of it's main industries was coal, but since the 1984
miners strike the coal faces are unstable and cannot be mined.
This hasn't stopped the progression of Castleford as an indusrial
town, in fact the opposite has happened. Some of the major companies have set up sites in and around
the Castleford area. These include technology giants Pioneer,
confectionery kings Nestle, chemical firm Hickson &
Welch and flour miller Allinson. Having this solid
base of companies in the region has created a domino effect on
all other aspects of life in Castleford. This positive and thriving attitude has meant more housing being built, houses that are creeping slowly upon Bill's home village of Allerton Bywater. Of course residents want to keep their villages sacred from becoming part of suburbia, community is important to all of us, but Castleford can count itself lucky that it hasn't become the ghost towns of many North-East mining towns and villages after the miners strike. Rugby League has always been the only sport worth watching
in Castleford. Here you won't see many kids running around with
Man Utd replica kits, no there is one team and one team only here................ It's moving along quite nicely in Castleford with all this
new money in the area, one of Castleford's more famous daughters
might just be shouting spend, spend, spend. Remember Viv Nicholson? So it's looking good for Castleford as it moves into the new
millennium.
